Based in Easter Compton, Bristol, it’s the first inland-surfing destination of its kind in Europe, where people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can experience the joy of surfing and its many physical and mental health benefits.

With the 200m surfing lake is at its heart, ground breaking technology generates up to 1,000 consistent, safe, quality waves per hour, ranging from 50cm to almost 2m in height, all year round. Every aspect of the surfing experience, from perfect waves and supportive lessons, to tried and tested wetsuits and boards, has been designed to ensure that surfing really is fun for all.

Underpinning The Wave’s culture is a strong belief that everyone learns differently, and there are many ways to ride a wave. Dedicated to providing a nurturing and supportive experience that gives you the skills and knowledge to surf your way, whatever your age, ability or fitness level. Experienced coaches will adjust lessons on the day to ensure they match and maximise participants’ surfing experience and confidence in the water.

Learn to Surf: Beginner surf lessons are a mixture of lakeside training and in-wave action, taking place in smaller white-water waves in the Bay. Your lesson will include a full health and safety briefing, thirty minutes dry land lesson including warm up activities, and one hour in the lake. Learn about water safety, surf equipment, body positioning and how to surf. Once you’re in the water, your instructor will support you all the way as you catch your first waves.

Waikiki Lessons for Improving Surfers: Held in groups of 10 with 2 dedicated instructors, Waikiki lessons are all about building confidence as you take that step from the white water to the Reef area of the lake. Learn to paddle out using the deeper channel, catch an unbroken wave, perfect your pop-up, trim skills, and how to make minor changes of direction, so you stay with the wave as it breaks, gaining a longer ride.

Intermediate Surf Lessons: Now it’s all about improving your skills and boosting your confidence, with a focus on controlling and manoeuvring your board as you ride the wave. Add in top and bottom turns, top turn snaps and cutbacks, as well as how to generate and maintain speed along a wave and perfect your take-off!

Advanced Surf Coaching: For surfers who are competent surfing the advanced wave setting or higher, these intensive courses use video analysis to focus in on individual’s technique, with a maximum of 3 surfers to one coach. After the surf, there is an hour of performance analysis, and you’ll receive a follow up video of your surfing with coaching annotations.

Beginner Bodyboarding: If you want some guaranteed fun, catching white water waves on a bodyboard these sessions are a great way to access the water and build confidence on a bodyboard while developing the basic, fundamental skills. Located in the shallow bay area of the complex, the consistent half-metre waves and controlled environment, exclusively for bodyboarders, will allow you to learn to position yourself in the water, catch a wave, and ride it into the shore in the correct position.

Improver Bodyboarding: You’ll move into the reef area of the lake, learning how to position yourself to take off and catch unbroken waves, as well as how to move around the lake wearing swim fins. Your coach will give you great tips and advice on how best to ride a variety of higher 1 metre waves, including those slow peeling waves with soft incline, and more rapidly breaking, steeper waves, plus developing the ability to take off and trim along an unbroken wave face.

Open Surfing and Boarding Sessions: Lessons aren’t mandatory! Once you start to progress, or for those who’ve already been introduced to the water, book a water session and enjoy the thrill of the waves at your own pace. From beginners to Advanced Plus, responsible assessment ensures you will always be allocated to the correct session, area, and height of waves for your ability and enjoyment, with plenty of helpful coaches on hand should you require.
