Clay Pigeon Shooting Yorkshire

Published on: 10/08/18

Clay Pigeon Shooting Yorkshire, or clay shooting, has been a popular countryside pursuit since the late 19th century. And at Let’s Go Out, we think that if you’re going to have a go at a popular countryside pursuit, you might as well do it in one of most beautiful parts of the countryside: Yorkshire.

After all, what better place to pull on your wellies and live out your rural idyll than in the rolling hills of the historic northern county? And as Yorkshire is the biggest county in the country, you’ll be spoiled for choice for places to go.

Going clay pigeon shooting in the stunning scenery of Yorkshire really will take you away from the boring 9-5 of modern life. All you’ll need is some warm, waterproof clothes and a good aim! So, what do you need to know about clay shooting before you book?

You won’t need a gun license

Although you’ll be shooting the clay ‘birds’ with a shotgun, you won’t need to apply for a license before you go. The venues have an exemption that allow visitors to use their shooting equipment and will be insured for their services.

They’ll also provide all the safety equipment you’ll need, such as ear defenders to protect your ears from the loud gun noises!

You will need sensible clothes!

The worst thing you can do on a clay pigeon shoot is rock up in jeans and a hoody. You’ll be standing outside for a while, and we all know how changeable the weather can be up North! Wear your sturdiest boots and warmest gear, and a waterproof jacket wouldn’t hurt either.

Leftie or rightie?

When you first go clay pigeon shooting, you’ll need to decide if you’re going to shoot with your right or left hand, and which is your dominant eye. You might shoot with one eye open, or both eyes.

It might take a few goes to get this right so don’t be disheartened! Your instructor will be able to advise on the best shooting stance for you.

Children can do Clay Pigeon Shooting

You might think that giving an excitable child a loaded shotgun is a recipe for disaster, but in fact clay shooting is a great sport for kids. For one thing, it’s outdoors and a lot more thrilling than shooting imaginary targets on the Xbox!

It’s also great for teaching hand-to-eye coordination, perseverance and sportsmanship. The minimum age for most clay pigeon shooting in Yorkshire is 11, but it’s always best to double check with individual venues on their policy before you book.

Be warned – it can be addictive!

We’ve heard from clay pigeon veterans and newbies alike that the satisfaction of hitting a clay and seeing it break apart can be addictive, and that people who’ve never even shot a gun before can turn out to be natural sharp-shooters! If you really get into it, you might want to apply for a shot gun license and get your own gun.
