Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing is one of our most popular activities. We use local crags which are best suited to beginners and intermediates and on the rare occasion that it rains, we have access to the Keswick indoor climbing wall. You will be fitted with the necessary safety equipment and introduced to techniques that allow you to reach the top of the climb. In addition, you may be taught the basic rope work skills to allow you to safely tie in and belay a partner; a wonderful exercise in mutual trust
High Ropes Course

Set in our own private and secluded woodland at Goosewell Farm, near Castlerigg Stone Circle and against the stunning backdrop of Blencathra, the High Ropes Course will certainly test your nerve. Fitted with a harness which links you to an overhead safety wire, you will be instructed to the workings of the safety system while on the low level elements. Once you have satisfied your Instructor that you can work safely, you can then move on to the exciting high ropes elements.

What better way to explore the surrounding Newlands valley than on a mountain bike? This popular outdoor pursuit allows you to take in the beautiful Lake District at your own pace while learning to mountain bike safely and effectively. You will be fitted with a mountain bike and helmet before spending a short while on our traffic free sports field, familiarising you with the workings of the bike. Once comfortable on the bike and the Instructor is satisfied with your technique

Keswick Climbing Wall and Activity Centre is based at Goosewell Farm, right next door to the ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle. With magnificent views out of the large main doors of St John’s in the Vale, sweeping over to the Helvellyn range, this edge of town site offers the best of the Lakeland countryside with the convenience of being only five minutes drive from the centre of Keswick. The climbing wall has over 40 top rope climbs with a height of up to 8 metres

Archery is one of the oldest outdoor leisure activities in the UK, practiced by peasants and Kings alike. Based at our onsite range, you will be introduced to the necessary skills and safety rules. And starting at an easy distance, you will soon be hitting the bull’s eye. After successful practice in games and fun exercises, you will move further from the target. Will it still be easy to hit a bull’s eye from the opposite end of the field?

Mountain Walking is a great way to exercise but is not the sort of outdoor activity that should be taken lightly. Proper attire, equipment and route planning are included in any mountain walk as well as reference to the weather forecast. We can arrange everything for your group, from a low level wander around the lake to a full day on England’s highest mountains, all very close to Newlands. You will be taken on a guided walk by one of our Instructors
Kayaking

You can’t come to the Lake District without taking to the water and trying your hand at Kayaking. Our water base is at the northern end of Derwentwater, one of the most beautiful lakes in England and close to the Centre. Kayaking is one of our more demanding but ultimately rewarding activities. Once fitted with waterproofs and a buoyancy aid, your Instructor will give a land based introduction to the skills needed to control your craft. Using a stable single seat kayak

You can’t come to the Lake District without taking to the water. Our water base is at the northern end of Derwentwater, one of the most beautiful lakes in England and close to the Centre. Canoeing is one of our more relaxing activities; easy to learn and great fun for all ages. After fitting with waterproofs and a buoyancy aid, your Instructor will give a land based introduction to the basic skills required to control your canoe and what to do if you capsize
Ghyll Scrambling

Ghyll Scrambling is hard to define but is invariably is the favourite activity of visitors to Newlands. A wet decent of a Lakeland mountain stream, Ghyll Scrambling starts with a twenty minute walk from our front door to the top of the ghyll. You will be equipped with several layers of clothing, waterproofs and a helmet, before being introduced to the safe method of scrambling, jumping and sliding required to safely make your descent, under the watchful eye of your Instructor
