Montford Bridge to Shrewsbury River Severn Canoe Trip

The Montford Bridge to Frankwell section of the River Severn is suitable for beginners, with a couple of gentle yet easy-to-navigate faster-flowing sections mixed with an ever changing view of rolling hills, forests and large country estates to keep the route exciting. You will be paddling with the current downstream into the heart of Shrewsbury.
This route is suitable for beginners, couples, families and groups. You are more then welcome to bring your dog along too!
Bring along a picnic lunch for this 5-hour adventure and enjoy your lunch floating through the countryside or pulled up along one of the stopping points en route.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife along this route—from fish jumping out of the water, to buzzards, herons, swans (maybe the black swan might make an appearance again this season!) and even kingfishers. The lucky few may even be graced with the presence of an otter or two!

- We meet you in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, in our big yellow minibus then drive you to our canoe hire centre in Montford Bridge where we will issue kit, explain the route, give you an introduction to your chosen craft and a safety brief and get you on the river!
Minimum Age
- Under-7s: the minimum age for this trip is 5 years old. To paddle this route with 5-7 year olds, you will need to be in a Rafted Canoe. This is where we secure two canoes together side-by-side to create a craft that cannot be capsized. This requires a minimum of two adults at the back of the boat to steer and propel the Rafted Canoe. In front of the two adults you can seat up to two young children (5+) and in front of them, a further two older children or adults. When booking, please select your choice of 2-seat or 3-seat canoes (at least two!) and then add the Rafted Canoe option.
- Under-10s: kids aged 7-10 will need to be accompanied by two adults and sit in the middle seat of a 3-seat canoe.
- Ages 10+ can paddle at the front of a 2-seat canoe with a responsible adult.

All participants will need to bring footwear to wear on the board that they are happy to get wet. Please note, there are no changing facilities in Frankwell.
All bookings are subject to safe wind and water conditions and as such it may be necessary to reschedule your booking if the forecast is unfavourable.

We have 3 different sizes of paddle board available to hire to suit varies sizes of paddler:
- 9’2″ – Suitable for children over the age of 10 or extra small adults

- 11’6″ – Suitable for larger adults up to 110 kg

2-Hour Canoe Hire on the River Severn in Shrewsbury

We meet you at Frankwell with your boat and equipment. After a short safety brief, we help you onto the water and you can go off and explore the medieval town of Shrewsbury or head upstream into the countryside.

- Ages 4+ may participate in a “rafted canoe”. This is where two canoes are secured together side by side. Minimum booking of 2 canoes.

1.5 days of canoeing with an overnight stay at our wild campsite on the banks of the River Severn in Shropshire.
Meet us in Montford Bridge first thing in the morning on Day 1, enjoy a whole day of canoeing (17 miles), a night of wild camping and on Day 2 a further 5 miles of canoeing until you reach Shrewsbury.
Itinerary
Day 1: Meet us at our base in Montford Bridge near Shrewsbury. You can leave your car parked at our site. We will issue you with kit and then drive you to the start point further upstream. Enjoy a leisurely day canoeing the 17 miles downstream to our wild campsite.
Day 2: Shorter distance to cover (5 miles) so take your time having breakfast and packing up camp and then meander downstream to Frankwell in the centre of Shrewsbury.
Useful Information
What to bring
- This is your chance to go full Bear Grylls! You could even collect driftwood along the way to make a camp fire and put your bushcraft skills to the test.
- Keep it simple and pack just the essentials you need to eat, drink and sleep—washing is optional!
- The most important thing to note is that you will need to take your own drinking water as there is no tap on site.

Llandrinio - Montford Bridge - Shrewsbury
Two days of canoeing on the River Severn with a night of camping at Montford Bridge. Pub stop on Day 1 and on-site pub in the evening.
Day 1
- 13 miles
Meet us at Montford Bridge, we will issue your kit and then drive you to the start point in Llandrinio.
Bring along a picnic lunch or stop off at the Royal Hill Inn in Edgerley. It is conveniently located just under half-way! If you want to book a table for food, we recommend booking it for 2pm.
Then carry on downstream to Montford Bridge, where you can camp on the field by the river.
Day 2
- 12 miles
Pack up camp then head off for your second day of canoeing, this time to Frankwell in the centre of Shrewsbury.
If you met us in Shrewsbury, this is where we will say goodbye! If you met us at Montford Bridge, we will drive you back to your car.

- Everything is included in the price, no extra charges for camping.
- Please note that the campsite facilities are very basic as the toilet facilities and showers at The Wingfield Caravan Park are currently closed. A portaloo is available for Hire a Canoe customers to use and there is a cold drinking water tap.
What to bring?
- If you park your car at Montford Bridge then it’s pretty easy, just imagine you are going car camping!
- No need to pack your ultralight mat or compact sleeping bag, if you are coming in your car you can pack as much as you need!
- If you are meeting us in Shrewsbury at the start, you can leave your camping gear at Montford Bridge, no need to take it with you in the canoe unless you want to.

Go canoeing for up to 2 hours and explore the section of the River Severn upstream of Montford Bridge.
This peaceful stretch is a beautiful slice of Shropshire countryside and a different part of the river to what you see on our river trips!

Once you get off the water, why not head over to the Wingfield Arms for a pizza?
The pub don’t just do pizza, they have a full menu with all the traditional favourites like burgers, fish & chips, lasagne…But we love pizza, so for us it’s always Paddle & a PIZZA!
The Pint part
What good would a pub be if it didn’t offer pints?
Grab yourself a fresh pint from the Wingfield Arms’ selection of draft ales, lagers and ciders to relax after all that paddling!
