Curious About... Lancaster
Explore Lancaster city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Lancaster's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Lancaster dates back at least as long ago as the Roman occupation. A Saxon church was later built within the ruined Roman walls as Lancaster became a strategic trading centre – by medieval times ships were using the River Lune.
A castle, perched high above the river defended the city from attack and for a short while Lancaster became the fourth most important port in the UK’s Slave Trade. Its legacy of fabulous Georgian architecture gives the city its stunning character today.
