How do you play paintball?
At its heart, paintball is all about strategy. With roots in military simulations and battle recreation, paintball pits two teams against each other to test their agility, marksmanship and teamwork. The aim of the game is to shoot the opposing team and avoid being shot yourself – and you’ll know when you’ve been shot as you’ll be covered in brightly coloured paint!
Depending on the rules of the game you’re playing, being shot can mean immediate elimination from the field of play or the chance to be ‘respawned’ by another member of your team, or you may have a set amount of lives before you’re eliminated.
Paintball games can vary from ‘capture the flag’ to ‘protect the president’ and ‘predator vs prey’. There is a reason hardcore paintball fans don’t get bored of playing it every weekend, as there are so many different ways to play!
Where do you play paintball?
99% of the time, paintball is played outside. The best venues incorporate wooded areas with lots of structures and trees to hide behind. You’ll also see your fair share of fun props like old vehicles and military equipment to add to the feeling of being in a real-life battle. One of the biggest benefits about paintball is the ability to play in all weathers – because you’re kitted out in protective safety gear, a bit of rain or wind won’t bother you.
What’s new in paintball?
In the last 5 years or so there’s been a huge boom in zombie-themed paintball games, inspired by TV shows like The Walking Dead. Trying to fend off a very convincing horde of the undead certainly adds a bit of excitement to the proceedings! This has been followed by a rise in more general apocalypse-themed paintball games, with elaborate and imaginative ‘end of the world’ scenarios adding to the fun.
