Best Land Rover Defender Off-Road Driving Experiences

Published on: 09/04/19

Driven by the military, police and even Lara Croft, it’s easy to see why the iconic Land Rover Defender is a firm favourite among 4x4 fans. In fact, many motoring experts claim it’s the greatest 4x4 ever made, so it’s even sadder that production ended in 2016.

Luckily, the legend of the Land Rover Defender is kept alive and well by the various adventure venues around the UK that let you drive them as they’re meant to be driven; off-road! Here’s our selection of some great places to experience the true terrain of this fab 4x4.

90 Dirty Adventures, Liverpool

Take to the hills of Wales to really push your driving skills for a whole day of guided off-road driving with 90 Dirty Adventures. You’ll discover a stunning landscape of green lanes and mountain tracks and will cover about 200 miles during your day out. Get your feet wet (metaphorically, hopefully!) by crossing streams and tackling difficult and muddy terrain. You can bring some friends with you and they can even arrange to pick you up from your hotel.

Avalanche Adventure, Leicestershire

The team at Avalanche Adventure are experienced at guiding first-timers through their first off-road driving experience, but they also have plenty to offer if it’s not your first time. As they say themselves, it can be addictive! On their 400-acre site in the middle of the country, you’ll find all types of terrain perfect for off-roading: hard and soft ground, steep inclines, shallow and deep water, side slopes, axle twisters and a wooded section. It’s a controlled environment but a very varied one, so perfect if you’ve never driven off-road before.

Land Rover, Solihull

Did you know you can do a full day of Defender off-road driving at Land Rover itself? They offer a 7-hour experience that’s a thorough exploration of the Defender’s capabilities. You’ll experience side slopes, articulations, humps, watercourse, angles, hill climbs, rock crawls, deep water, deep rutted tracks, steep inclines. Phew! Luckily there’s a break for lunch and refreshments waiting for you after the afternoon session.

Yorkshire Outdoors, Yorkshire

Claiming to offer one of the most extreme off-road experiences in the UK, Yorkshire Outdoors designed their 50-acre course specifically with the Defender in mind. They can guarantee wet and muddy fun all year round, as the tracks pass through natural springs. Clever as this is the part most off-roaders are keen to try! If you’re new or nervous you can start with as little as 30 minutes in the driving seat, up to a whole day. They also offer ‘shoot n drive’ packages if you want to pair your off-road driving with some clay pigeon shooting for the full countryside experience!

These are just a few of the places in the UK where you can get behind the wheel of a Land Rover Defender and get really mucky. Good job we live in a country where mud is pretty much a year-round thing! If you’ve tried your hand at driving off-road recently, we’d love to hear how you got on.
