Days Out in South Wales

Published on: 21/06/22

A vibrant country that can be reached in less than two hours from London, yet whose rich culture and heritage feels a world away, welcome to South Wales! Capital city Cardiff is home to a vibrant cultural scene and capital city status shopping, in flagship stores and also the many boutiques and independent shops that throng its famous ornate Victorian and Edwardian shopping arcades. Nestled in the heart of the city centre, iconic Cardiff Castle is one of more than 600 castles across Wales, so fortification fans will be spoiled for choice!

Discover award-winning beaches and water-sport adventures along the Wales Coast Path, one of the few footpaths in the world to follow a whole national coast, or relax in Pemrokeshire’s flower-filled garden havens. Feel the adrenaline rush on treetop and quarry zipline adventures, try out mountain biking, exhilarating whitewater rafting, or head out into the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. And of course, as a famously sporting nation, you could catch a thrilling rugby match at towering Principality Stadium, refresh with Welsh beer, or just pile up the Welsh cakes!

Go Ape Margam

Boasting some of the finest scenery in Wales, Margam Park’s 1000 acres of varied parkland is home to Dracula-tastic Margam Castle, the largest deer herd in Wales, and some very special Go Ape exclusives. It’s Go Ape’s very first (and only) Welsh Tree Top Adventure, it boasts the only sea views across all Go Ape sites, and the UK’s biggest Tarzan Swing- a heart-in-your-mouth freefall of six massive metres! All within easy reach of Swansea and Cardiff, it’s an epic South Wales day out like no other.

Likened to a roller coaster in the trees, this incredible Tree Top Adventure involves fun and adventure across five sites, each featuring award-winning high ropes, tunnels, obstacle crossovers, bridges, and epic wind-in-your-face 180m zip wires to finish. Escape the world and challenge yourself as you tackle the Bosuns Chair, Log Balance and core-strengthening Stirrups. With adjustable difficulty, it’s perfect for adventurers looking to complete their very own personalised course and smash some goals along the way. Once your legs have stopped shaking, there’s the stunning park and 19th century Gothic mansion to explore!

Breakout Live Swansea

A South Wales venue which offers a gateway to off-planet adventure, Breakout Live Swansea, conveniently situated in the heart of the city, is Wales’ premier escape room, with three exciting, unique, and very different games to choose from. Locked in a room with 2-6 friends, family or colleagues, search high and low for clues and work together to solve a series of puzzles and mysteries to escape. There are no physical activities or challenges involved in Breakout Live’s games, making them very inclusive and great for all the family, from minimum recommended age 10. Everything you need is inside your head; with the clock ticking down, you have 60 minutes to escape by using only your grey matter and cooperation!

Find yourself unfairly framed for murder in Prison Strike, and solve the clues to execute the ultimate escape plan, or trapped in Mumbles Bunker with Wales’ most dangerous- and unhinged- criminal mind, whom you must unmask for your own survival. Or take it intergalactic on the Voyager spacecraft, where your suspended animation is interrupted after the ship’s systems malfunction. Your in-character guide will accompany on your journey, challenge you, cheer you on, and just might be persuaded to hand over useful information… if you work for it!

The Royal Mint Experience

Even if we’re counting the pennies a bit more, as we at Let’s Go Out celebrate, there are plenty of fantastic, great-value visitor experiences and grand days out close to wherever you look in the UK. And where better than seeing those actual pennies and pounds being minted in the heart of Wales! The Royal Mint Experience at Llantrisant is the only place in the world where you can watch the UK’s coins being made, including commemorative coins minted for this very special Jubilee year; the perfect time to visit.

Go behind the scenes to follow the journey of a coin from a blank to a bank in a fascinating 45-minute guided factory experience. Then wander at your own pace through the interactive exhibition, discovering the incredible processes needed to make a coin. Come face to face with British monarchs over the past 1,000 years, and listen to the stories of those whose bravery has been rewarded with the UK's gallantry and service medals. Get up close to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic medal, and even hold a 400oz gold bar, worth over £400,000! (and sadly too heavy to make a dash for it- not that we’ve tried…!)
