Days Out in Liverpool

Published on: 20/04/22

City of The Beatles, culture and sport, Liverpool has something for every person, group and interest. With museums, galleries, unique historic buildings, arts centres and sporting venues, it has attractions throughout the whole city and (fact fans) more museums and galleries than any other UK city outside London.

Choose to visit the Beatles Story, Tate Liverpool, or the Merseyside Maritime Museum, or simply stroll around and enjoy the scenery, shops, cafes and restaurants. Everyone will love the vibrant Mersey waterfront; centred around the Royal Albert Dock, it's packed with hotels, shops, restaurants, and museums, and is home to exciting events. A short walk along the waterfront is the Museum of Liverpool, which brings Liverpool's incredible heritage to life. And when the night approaches- well, you’re in the home of generous hospitality and great music!

Western Approaches Museum

Liverpool’s best-kept hidden secret, you were once required to sign the Official Secrets Act to enter its underground labyrinth of rooms and offices, now open for visitors to freely explore. This historic WW2 bunker is a precious time capsule, and although the 300 war time staff have long gone, a visit will transport you back to uncover the stories, lives, and key responsibilities of the people who once worked there. Described as “one of the key strategic buildings where the Second World War was won”, you’ll step back in time on a fascinating self-guided tour taking 1-2 lose-yourself hours.

The Operations Room has remained exactly as it was left when the doors were closed on 15 August 1945, allowing you to see the documents and tools the British Armed Forces used to monitor enemy convoys and keep the British government informed, including one of only two surviving wartime phones which had a direct connection to the London War Cabinet. See where Commanders, WRNS and WAAF personnel worked day and night in the nerve centre of the Battle of the Atlantic. Here they monitored vital shipping lines and tracked enemy movements on a huge map wall for the Royal Navy- take your place, step up and feel the pressure!

Fab 4 Taxi Tours

Why slog round the city streets when you can travel in style? Fab 4 Taxi Tours is Liverpool’s original taxi sightseeing tour company. Not just for Beatles fans, their Liverpool history, sightseeing, Beatles, combination and bespoke tours are all private, transporting just you and your group of family, friends or colleagues. Using professional taxi drivers, who know the city and its history better than anyone, each driver is a character in their own right, and will give you a unique tour that you'll remember for a lifetime.

A great introduction to the city, Best of Liverpool is a fascinating guided tour in your private taxi cab, exploring the wonderful centre, cathedrals and waterfront as well as the iconic Anfield stadium and Liverpool Football Club, with stories all the way. A variety of Beatles tours, from one hour to half-day, present the band’s best stories and insights, including Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, Eleanor Rigby's grave, Woolton village and the childhood homes and haunts of the Fab 4. Pick a deluxe tour for added special visits to the Casbah Coffee Club, behind-the-scenes tours of the world famous Cavern Club, even an audience with The Quarrymen!

Merseyside Ferries

The Mersey is at the heart of Liverpool’s identity, so why not take a “ferry, cross the Mersey”, for the ultimate Liverpool sightseeing experience? See Liverpool and Wirral's most iconic sights aboard the world-famous Mersey Ferry with a 50 minute River Explorer Cruise, offering stunning views of the city skyline and the River Mersey. Learn about the city's rich musical heritage, the role of the ferries in the First World War, and Liverpool’s maritime history- all you need to do is sit back, relax and take in the views, or hop off and visit Woodside Ferry Village for some delicious food and drink.

Explore further with the 3-hour Liverpool Bay Cruise, with expert commentary on the fascinating history and geography of the River Mersey and Liverpool Bay commentary from a Blue Badge Guide. Enjoy incredible scenery and panoramic views of the river as you sail past Royal Seaforth Docks, Fort Perch Rock, New Brighton and the Crosby Channel towards Blundellsands and Formby. Featuring live music from local group The Shanty Kings, the one-of-a-kind tour culminates with a unique seal’s eye view of sculptor Anthony Gormley’s 100 cast-iron life-sized figures ‘Another Place’, stretching out into the sea at Crosby Beach.

The Beatles Story

When in Liverpool… we had to include the award-winning The Beatles Story, the world's largest permanent exhibition dedicated to the Beatles, right in the heart of their hometown. Located on the stunning waterfront at the Royal Albert Dock, you’ll be taken on an immersive, atmospheric journey through the story of the lives, times, culture and music of the Fab Four. On your magical history tour you’ll experience how four young lads from Liverpool were propelled from humble childhood beginnings to the dizzy heights of worldwide fame and fortune to become the greatest band of all time.

Find out how the group met, and walk through recreations of key locations and moments from the band’s career including The Casbah Club, Hamburg, The Cavern Club, Abbey Road Studios, America and much, much more. A must for any music fan, The Beatles Story features an impressive collection of fascinating authentic memorabilia including original instruments, clothing, John Lennon’s spectacles, Ringo Starr’s drum kit, rare album sleeves, never-before-seen photography and original handwritten lyrics. With café, store, and a rolling programme of special exhibitions, you’ll always discover something new to “please, please you”.
