Curious About... Leeds
Explore Leeds city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with a treasure hunt theme. Discover Leeds's "hidden treasures" whilst having a fun day out with family and friends!
Leeds is a West Yorkshire city buzzing with life. In 1888, the French inventor Louis Le Prince shot the first ever moving picture there, but two years later he mysteriously vanished without trace. On Christmas Day 1891, Owen “Owney” Madden was born, going on to become one of New York City’s most feared and prosperous gangsters.
Natives of Leeds are known as Loiners. The record for the most people dressed as Sherlock Holmes (443) was made in 2014, and the city was once inhabited by a great northern hippopotamus.
